Ellis Fischel Gala to feature Tony, Grammy nominee
The 14th annual Summer Celebration Gala benefiting Ellis Fischel Cancer Center will be held Saturday, Aug. 28, at The Lodge of Four Seasons in Lake Ozark, Mo.

A silent auction will begin at 5 p.m. Dinner and entertainment will follow. The event will feature Tony and Grammy nominee Michael Cavanaugh. A charismatic performer, Cavanaugh was made famous for his piano and lead vocals in the Broadway musical "Movin' Out." Cavanaugh was handpicked by Billy Joel to star in the show, and he evokes a style rivaling the Piano Man. He appeared in the show for three years and more than 1,200 performances.

Since its beginning in 1997, "A Summer Celebration" has raised more than $1 million for Ellis Fischel Cancer Center, supporting many projects, including the Ellis Fischel mobile screening van, the Ernest and Eugenia Wyatt Guest House, research laboratories and equipment. This year's event will benefit a healing garden courtyard in the new Ellis Fischel facility as well as clinical trials.

For more information, please call (573) 884-1190 or (866) 260-4517 or visit www.ellisfischel.org.

Social media guidelines enacted at University of Missouri Health Care
With the emergence of social media platforms and popular Web sites like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, University of Missouri Health Care leaders want staff to know the appropriate ways to use these online tools when related to MU Health Care.

A collaborative team of representatives from MU Health Care began meeting in the fall of 2009 to address the emergence of social media and its impact on the institution. Collectively, the group identified ways to amend existing policies as they relate to social media. The group also developed guidelines for patients, visitors and staff in using social media Web sites when they relate to MU Health Care.

Among the team's guidelines for employees include:

  • Employees should be aware you are personally responsible for your comments online.
  • When you are away from work, you are under the same HIPAA regulations as when you are at work.
  • Communicating information online about patients without proper authorization is unacceptable and can lead to disciplinary action.
  • Postings on personal social media platforms should not discredit fellow co-workers, patients, visitors or MU Health Care.

Postings about or on behalf of MU Health Care are made only on officially created MU Health Care Social Media Web sites by the MU Health Care Public Relations and Marketing Department. Contact the public relations department at 882-1081 if you have information about your department or official MU Health Care activities and events you would like publicized. If you would like to visit MU Health Care on Facebook, please visit http://www.facebook.com/pages/University-of-Missouri-Health-Care/148378532646. If you would like to follow MU Health Care on Twitter please visit http://twitter.com/muhealth.

To protect the safety and privacy of our patients, physicians and staff, no video recording, audio recording or photography is allowed inside University of Missouri Health Care facilities without the prior permission of the MU Health Care Public Relations Department. An exception is the Family Birth Center at Columbia Regional Hospital, where limited videotaping by family members or friends is allowed in private patient rooms with the prior permission of the patient's attending physician.

MU Health Care unveils Missouri Orthopaedic Institute
University of Missouri Health Care celebrated the official opening of the region's most comprehensive orthopaedic surgery center May 26.

The Missouri Orthopaedic Institute, located at 1100 Virginia Ave., near the intersection of Stadium Boulevard and Monk Drive, is the newest and largest freestanding orthopaedic hospital in central Missouri. The $55.5 million facility will provide orthopaedic patients with a full range of care - from inpatient orthopaedic surgery to rehabilitation services - in a single location.

"This new facility was designed and built with the needs of orthopaedic patients as our central focus," said James Stannard, MD, chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the MU School of Medicine and J. Vernon Luck Sr. Distinguished Professor. "It offers convenient access for patients with wheelchairs and crutches, and patient rooms designed for efficient orthopaedic care. The first thing that patients will notice when they enter our new facility is that it is very supportive of what they need. Everything is designed specifically for the orthopaedic patient."

The new facility will include:

  • 45 exam rooms
  • Five operating rooms (two procedure rooms with C-arm and fluoroscopy capabilities)
  • 16 private inpatient beds
  • A full-service pharmacy
  • Radiology services, with X-ray and MRI
  • Rehabilitation services
  • Prosthetic and orthotic services
  • A dining area called the Atrium Café

"Our specialists serve patients from every county in the state of Missouri, and this new facility will enable us to provide the region's most comprehensive, state-of-the-art orthopaedic care," said James Ross, chief executive officer of MU Health Care. "

The 115,500 square-foot building will house approximately 200 physicians and staff, including more than 20 University Physicians orthopaedic surgeons who specialize in sports medicine, joint replacement, pediatrics, hip and knee, foot and ankle, shoulder, hand, spine and trauma care.

"To say that we are excited would be an understatement," Stannard said. "We have been very successful in recruiting world-class orthopaedic surgeons to MU. Now we have a facility that will offer a superior platform for patient care, education and research, which is the mission of our health system."

Construction of the Missouri Orthopaedic Institute began with a ground-breaking ceremony in June 2008.

Recycling programs offer employees many options
MU Health Care Recycling ProgramsPartnering with University of Missouri Campus Facilities and the Sustainability Office, MU Health Care leaders are making "green" design a priority in the new Missouri Orthopaedic Institute and patient care tower construction projects.

MU Health Care is pursing Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for both projects from the U.S. Green Building Council. The LEED certifications would be the first for the University of Missouri System.

"A basic building block of the U.S. Green Building Council's sustainable design awards is proof of a successful recycling program in each project," said Clarissa Easton, AIA, chief facilities officer. "We need everyone's help in demonstrating MU Health Care's commitment to our community and to good stewardship of the environment."

MU Health Care partners with MU to recycle numerous products, including plastic and aluminum beverage containers, paper and cardboard, batteries, linens, and printer ink and toner cartridges.

To view a full-size PDF of a poster detailing recycling programs, including paper, batteries, cardboard, printer ink and toner cartridges, and linens, please click here.

To choose paperless paycheck records, visit the myHR site at https://myhr.umsystem.edu. Once you are logged in, click the "Self Service" tab, then "Payroll and Compensation," then "View Paycheck" and "Set Pay Advice Delivery Method (campus mail or online)." "EAP can help employees cope with and resolve virtually every life problem," Hunter said.
